Advocacy 101 pre-conference workshop
Room: South American 1
One person can make a difference. Discover how to be a successful advocate for the change rural
health needs. Join the NRHA in a hands-on workshop where you will be trained on how to be
successful in rural health care. Learn invaluable tips for communicating with your elected
representatives and become skilled in advancing your legislative goals in Congress. There is a
separate charge for this workshop.

This session will provide an overview of the 21st Annual Rural Health Policy Institute, including
an overview of the conference agenda, conference goals and an introduction of the members of
the Policy Partnership.

The Administration’s Proposal for Rural Health
With officials from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
Presidential Ballroom
This must-attend session will detail the efforts within the Health Resources and Services
Administration to strengthen the future of rural health. HRSA administers many of the programs
crucial to the health of rural America and will play a major role in the implementation of health
reform this year.

With officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Health reform legislation will result in significant changes in the administration of the Medicare
and Medicaid programs. This session will outline what changes are underway for providers and
patients, what rural Americans can expect in the coming year from the Medicare and Medicaid
programs, and the future initiatives of the new Administration.

when our nation has gone to war. The NRHA and the Veterans
Administration have made it a top priority to care for the veterans when they
return home. Join NRHA and the VA to honor those rural Americans who
have answered the call to service.

With David Blumenthal, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology - invited

Both the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and health reform legislation made
investments in HIT and changes to the way HIT programs are administered. Hear directly from
the nation’s leader in HIT about his efforts to implement a nationwide, interoperable, privacyprotected health information
technology infrastructure.

Health information technology and technologies, such as electronic medical records, have
been touted as potential drivers of health reform, quality improvers and cost savings.

However, rural facilities often have difficulties affording such improvements and
accessing the high speed grids that are necessary for these technologies to work. A panel
of national technology experts will explain some of the policy challenges that are in the
way of efforts to further use technology in the rural health system.

CMS will be hosting their monthly rural health conference call from the Policy Institute. Join
live in this discussion of Rural Health Clinic (RHC), Community Access Hospital (CAH) and
Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) issues, as well as other questions and concerns that
occur in clinical practice pertaining to other CMS payment systems that also extend into these
settings.
